About Hajjah Fatimah Mosque

Hajjah Fatimah Mosque, located near Beach Rd or along Kampong Glam, is a unique architectural landmark. Completed in 1846, the masjid blends Islamic and European styles, making it visually distinctive. Notably, it is the first local masjid to be named after a woman, honoring Hajjah Fatimah, a prominent businesswoman and philanthropist.

Originally known as the Java Road Masjid, it earned this name from a nearby road that no longer exists. Today, the masjid is the only remaining structure from the former Java Road settlement. Built on the site of Hajjah Fatimah’s former residence, it symbolizes both her resilience and gratitude.

Combining eastern and western design elements, the masjid features a unique minaret that noticeably leans to one side. This distinct characteristic has led locals to nickname it the “leaning tower of Singapore.” On 28 June 1973, the government officially gazetted the masjid as a national monument.

Hajjah Fatimah Mosque, with its unique architectural charm and inspiring story, continues to be a significant part of Singapore’s cultural and spiritual heritage.
