Sultan Mosque, located near Bugis or Arab Street, is one of Singapore’s most iconic landmarks. The mosque came into existence after Sultan Hussain Shah reached an agreement with the British East India Company while living in the Kampong Glam area.

Initially, the mosque featured a single-story structure with a two-tiered roof, which resembled other traditional Southeast Asian mosques like the Kampong Laut Mosque in Johor Bahru. However, this modest design marked only the beginning of its development.

Built in 1824, it was one of the first few masjids to be built on the island. It was later rebuilt in 1920 by Swan and Maclaren who were responsible for Singapore’s other important landmarks. The masjid is a mix of Classical, Persian, Moorish and Turkish themes that form what is known as the Islamic Saracenic style. The community constructed a new building next to the original one, resulting in the magnificent structure we see today.

Today, the Sultan Mosque is easily recognizable by its impressive golden dome and surrounding minarets, which showcase its rich cultural and spiritual heritage. Remarkably, the base of the dome consists of glass bottles donated by lower-income Muslims. This detail reflects the spirit of inclusiveness and community involvement that defined the mosque’s construction.

Through the years, the Sultan Mosque has remained a symbol of unity, faith, and dedication among Singapore’s Muslim community.
